Queen Elizabeth I

Haley's 6th grade class presented a wax museum today. Each child chose a person and did a write up on that person, along with props, a costume and a 30 second memorized speech. They were all set up and had buttons on their tables. When someone would push the button, the child became the wax character of the person they have been studying and did their speech. Sometimes there would be questions asked after the speech, and these 6th graders sure knew their stuff! Haley had a BLAST studying Queen Elizabeth I (and last week I rented "Elizabeth, the Golden Years... I HIGHLY recommend this movie, it's amazing!) and we had some super cool books on her from the library and Haley had printed up a bunch of famous quotes by this amazing Queen! So we've had a fun week of Queen Elizabeth! Haley loved this project and did a great job on her speech, I had several mothers come up to me telling me how great she did and how well she knew her material! Great job Haley Elisabeth on portraying Queen Elizabeth!
Waiting patiently for a group to come by to push her button!
Queen Elizabeth!!!

Queen Elizabeth's display area. See the 'button' that activates the Queen Elizabeth wax figure? Anytime a person pushed that button, away she went with her speech!!!

Deb...I'm laughing! You are so fast at getting these photos up! I'm glad because I was wondering how her report turned out. I am NOT in the mood to clean or deal with sick babies so I thought I'd play on the computer and since your blog is the only one I know how to get to I thought I'd check it out! (I've got to stay away from shopping on line!!!) I will have to send you photos via email of Hayden's "Martha Washington" display. Funny how similar Queen Elizabeth and Martha Washington look?!?! Although, Martha has such lovely white curly hair! I'm glad the dress worked so well for both of them. We'll have to use it for Nat and Abs later.

Too cool!

(Hey, you need to change your blogger profile so that your email is visible so then I can email you directly from your comments!)

There are different views on Becoming Jane. Most Austen fans will tell you that it's not accurate to her life. Basically, it's a story based on a book that is based on speculation. There is very little information about her from her personal papers, etc. and while Tom LeFroy is mentioned, there is little proof that theirs was a romance. The film wanted to make it as if she was Elizabeth Bennet and that she based Elizabeth on herself.

But, don't let that deter you from reading her. Read Pride and Prejudice. It's not her first novel, but it's wonderful and it's her most popular. And then watch the A&E version with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. Don't bother with the Keira Knightley tripe. (Seriously. The film itself is salvageable, but she's horrible.)

Northanger Abbey is her first novel and is one of my favorites. It's a snarky satire about the gothic novels of the time. There's a new film out that was recently shown on PBS and it's a good adaptation.

I also love Persuasion and after you read it, watch the 1995 film version with Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root. It's SO much better than the newer BBC/PBS version that was recently shown on PBS. Trust me!

Alan just finished reading Sense and Sensibility. The Emma Thompson film is a wonderful adaptation.

Mansfield Park is the one that I don't enjoy as much as the others. I need to read it again though.

Let me know what you think after you read them!!
